Auction characters also allow you the instant access you need to the auction house.  You can simple mail all of your items to this character and they will instantly be there when needed.  Some people will also start their auction character with a small amount of money, anywhere between 50-500g, and buy and resell items straight from the auction house.  If you have a keen eye for prices and know what is reasonable you can usually catch deals on popular items with the help of any wow gold guide of course, or even deals on buy outs that seem to be incredibly low, and turn the item around and sell it for profit.
