Let's start with the basics.

What is World of Warcraft?

As it stands, World of Warcraft is Blizzard Entertainment's fourth title in the successful Warcraft Series. However, unlike its counterparts, it focuses on role-playing your selected character through vast regions that remain uncharted, inviting explorers and prospectors to taste their dangers. The Warcraft World is rich, dangerous and grand. Kingdoms struggle to establish themselves in the aftermath of the War, and new forces gather their power. The other planes of existence are open to those who know their secrets and have in depth knowledge of the game obtained from numerous wow strategy guides.

World of Warcraft was released on 23 November 2004 and since it's launch players have competed in the game for money, experience, reputation and unique or rare items which in turn allowed them to gain greater skills, power and wealth. We won’t mention the mounts, pets and other goodies that you can get in the game becasue it may be confusing without reading the end of this wow strategy guide first.

Here are some easy steps to get started

Once you have installed World of Warcraft to your PC, and have started the game, you will be presented with a few choices. First select a Realm/Game World. Each realm is a separate game world with thousands of characters playing at any given time. There are three types of realms, each reflecting a different style of game play. Normal (PvE - Player vs. Environment)

This realm is suggested for new players. On a 'Normal' realm other players won't be able to attack you without your consent, so you will be free to focus on exploring the vast valleys and battle against a myriad of great NPC's (Non-Player Characters) that populate the world of warcraft game.

Player versus Player (PvP)

In a wow strategy guide, these PvP realms are explained to players and tell you that opponents will attack you based on the fact that you will be in one of the two opposing factions known as the Horde vs. Alliance. If you like competitive game play then this realm will be for you. The main way PvP is playes is over a high-speen internet connection.

Roleplaying (RP)

If you like the idea of playing the game in-character, which essentially is 'role-play' then this realm will be for you. Select a fantasy theme name for your character and start your adventure as an arrogant Shaman with a secret hidden past or a powerful priest that has to find the ultimate healing potion recipes. Use a wow strategy guide to help you. Playing in-character means you will 'pretend' you are this character when talking to others in-game and create your own destiny in this realm.

* Please remember, that if you want to play with friends make sure to choose the same server they are gaming on or else you won't be able to play with them.

Next you need to create your character. Once you have selected your server you need to choose your character's race, class and appearance. The Character Creation Screen will guide you through these choices.

Here you will see that there are two opposing factions in World of Warcraft The Horde and Alliance

As you’ve probably read in any other online world of warcraft strategy guide, there are two bitter enemies and players from opposing factions cannot communicate with each other within the game so choose you side and try to anticipate the enemies’ plans. Therefore, if you wish to play the game with a friend, make sure you both select races within the same faction and be sure to read a wow strategy guide so you both know what you're doing. It is also recommended you choose the same race if you want to begin in the same starting area.

Here are some tips for choosing your class

Melee fighters generally fall into two categories; Those that deal massive damage but have a weaker defense (such as Rogues and Shaman) and those that absorb high damage but aren't as adept at inflicting it (such as Warriors and Paladin).

Ranged fighters attack from a distance, using either powerful spells or ranged weapons. Common tactic is to have one ranged fighter and one melee fighter that will engage the enemy in battle, thus ensuring that the ranged attacker has enough time to inflict damage upon the opponent. Classes that make effective use of ranged attacks are Hunters, Magi, Warlocks, Druids, Shaman and Priests.

Healers are the lifeline of any group. During battle, a group will depend on the Priest to heal them and keep himself alive at all cost. An effective healer will always be in more demand than some of the other classes.

Your First Quest

NPC's are characters within the game that aren't controlled by other players. They are the quest givers, merchants and skill trainers of World of Warcraft. When a NPC has information regarding a quest for you, a symbol appears above the character's head. The symbols and their explanations are as follows:

Take note of these parts of my world of warcraft strategy guide:

Yellow exclamation points above their heads mean that the NPC has a quest to give to you.

A yellow exclamation mark means that you have satisfied the requirements for the quest that the NPC gave you. Speak with the NPC to receive your reward.

A grey exclamation point means that the NPC will have a quest for you in the near future. You will need to reach a higher level before you can undertake the quest.

To get started, find a NPC with a yellow '!' above it's head. Approach the NPC and right-click the mouse to receive the quest information. Then simply follow the direction and once completed get your reward.
